Insurance Cancellation Letter

Cancel a policy in writing so there is no dispute about the date. This free generator produces a letter that identifies the policy, states the cancellation date, requests a refund of unearned premium, and asks for written confirmation.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to this site or anyone else. Copy, print, or download the result.

What this letter must include

  • The policy number and the named insured exactly as shown on the policy
  • The type of policy
  • The cancellation date and time (12:01 a.m. on the date your replacement coverage starts, never before)
  • A request for a pro-rata refund of unearned premium and how to send it
  • An instruction to stop automatic payments as of the cancellation date
  • A request for written confirmation
  • Your signature and a mailing address

Questions

Will I get a refund?

If you cancel mid-term you are usually owed unearned premium, calculated pro rata or on a short-rate basis that keeps a penalty. The letter requests a pro-rata refund; the carrier will apply its policy terms.

Should I cancel before the new policy starts?

No. Set the cancellation date on or after the effective date of the replacement policy so there is no gap. A lapse in auto or homeowners coverage can raise your future premiums.

Does my lender or lienholder need to know?

Yes, if the policy is on a financed vehicle or mortgaged property. Give them the new policy information at the same time or they may force-place coverage.

Can I cancel by phone?

Many carriers accept phone cancellation but a written request with the date fixes the record. Keep a copy and the carrier's written confirmation.

Schedule of Insurance / Insurance Summary — $19

Keep a one-page Schedule of Insurance so the next cancellation, renewal, or lender request takes five minutes instead of an afternoon of digging through declarations pages.
