Questions
Why score quotes instead of picking the cheapest?
Premium differences of 10 to 20 percent are common and usually reflect a narrower form, a higher deductible, or a weaker carrier rather than a better deal. Scoring forces you to look at limits, exclusions, and carrier rating before price.
What weights should I use?
The default weights favor coverage breadth and carrier financial strength over premium. Adjust them to your situation; a cash-constrained startup may weight premium heavily, a contractor with large contracts may weight limits.
Can I compare more than four carriers?
Insert columns to the right of the fourth carrier; the weighted score formula references each carrier column, so copy the formula across.
What should go in the exclusions rows?
The exclusions that differ between quotes, not every exclusion. Ask each carrier for its list of manuscript and non-standard exclusions; the ISO base forms are the same across carriers.
